چکیده

Many active galactic nuclei (AGN) show strong variability of the optical continuum. Since the line flux, profile shapes and intensity ratios are changing, we analyze the variability patterns and possible periodicity of Type 1 AGN NGC 5548, using the Eigenvector 1 (EV1) diagram in different variability states, taking advantage of very long term monitoring campaign data. The preliminary results suggest that NGC 5548—a highly variable object that over several decades has shown large amplitude continuum fluctuations and flaring behavior—remains Pop B. This means that the range in Eddington ratio, even when the source is in a bright state, remains consistent with the value of the low accreting Pop B. We inspected EV 1 parameters of a single object though long term monitoring, assuming an inclination and black hole mass to be constant during the observational time. Our results imply that the main driver for the variations along the EV 1 diagram could be dimensionless accretion rate. If so, then it appears that the source never crossed the boundary for structural changes, indicatively placed at L/LEdd ∼ 0.2.

We present results of optical long-term variability campaigns (10 – 20 years) of the two Seyfert galaxies NGC 7603 and Mrk 110. The variations of the continuum, of the individual broad line intensities and of their line profiles are investigated in detail and compared to line profile variations in NGC 5548 and NGC 4593. Individual emission line profiles vary differently from line to line and fr...

On the Reliability of Cross Correlation Function Lag Determinations in Active Galactic Nuclei

Many AGN exhibit a highly variable luminosity. Some AGN also show a pronounced time delay between variations seen in their optical continuum and in their emission lines. In effect, the emission lines are light echoes of the continuum. This light travel–time delay provides a characteristic radius of the region producing the emission lines. The cross correlation function (CCF) is the standard too...

Testing Radiation Pressure Corrections to Reverberation Mapping Masses

Multi-epoch reverberation mapping of the Seyfert galaxy, NGC 5548, suggests that radiation pressure is not strongly biasing the black hole (BH) masses derived for active galactic nuclei (AGNs). The model proposed by Marconi et al. to account for radiation pressure in BH mass estimates fails to explain the observations of NGC 5548, the only AGN with reverberation campaigns spanning a sufficientl...

Physical properties of the BLR of NGC 5548 3

We investigate the variability of physical parameters in the Broad Line Region (BLR) of NGC 5548 using the Boltzmann plot (BP) method. We apply the method on the Balmer lines observed from 1996 to 2004, and find that variability earlier detected in the lines, is also present in the temperature. We find that the average temperature for the considered period was T≈ 10000 K, and that varies from 6...

Physical Properties of the Blr of Ngc 5548: Long Term Variability

Here we investigate the variability of physical parameters in the broad line region (BLR) of NGC 5548 using the BP method given by Popović (2003). We apply the method on the Balmer lines observed from 1996 till 2004, and found that variability seen in lines, is also present in the electron temperature. We found that the averaged electron temperature for the period was T= 22600 K, and that varie...
